August 02,2020IMPACT OF NEPOTISM IN OUR SOCIETY...
Nepotism is a specific form of favoritism in which a business leader prioritizes hiring a family member over a nonfamily member. While it is certainly a controversial topic in business ethics, it isn't inherently unethical to employ family members.
Nowadays, It is just like corruption founded everywhere . Nepotism is common in politics, judiciary, business and in the film industry. It goes on even in religious circles, arts, industry, and other types of organizations. Many members of Parliament and various Legislative Assemblies have a generations-long legacy of nepotic allocation of constituencies to their relatives.
Nepotistic practices are known to all ages and societies, and all ideologies and political systems. In fact, they have provided the basic organizing principles of politics for much of human history. Arguably, all aristocratic, dynastic, or ruling hereditary regimes share with nepotism the feature of elevating family members as successors regardless of their fitness for the inherited or bestowed position.
IMPACT OF NEPOTISM:-
• Disruption of the workforce
One of the chief complaints in a company that operates through nepotism is the patent lack of fairness. Perceived favoritism of a relative can cause dissatisfaction among workers and lower morale. Employees may have less incentive to perform their responsibilities diligently and proficiently if they feel that the path to promotion is undermined by nepotism.
• Increased risk of lawsuits
Very few laws regulate nepotism at either the state or federal level. In fact, some states have no laws prohibiting the practice. Nevertheless, the consequences of nepotism may increase your risk of being sued for
discrimination or hostile work environment.
•Loss of productivity
Nepotism usually leads to an inferior work product. Employees who are rewarded and promoted because of their relationships with management are likely to be underqualified for the positions they are expected to fill. That can lead to an erosion of leadership skills at the senior level of the corporation and also contribute to the demoralization of more deserving candidates.
•lack of recognition
This mainly done in film industry faced by promising actors, filmmakers, scriptwriters, editors, cinematographers, lyricists, singers, music composers, choreographers, etc. Unfortunately, the debate gets confined to the actors as they're more visually accessible to the audience.
Ways to overcome Nepotism:-
•Reinforcement :- being a part of the family or a friend may get you in the door, but you have to perform and probably to a higher level and without as much praise.
•Anti- nepotism policies:-
Anti-nepotism policies restrict related individuals from working in the same department or company. Employees who adopt these policies need to state the cases which concern nepotism. For example, policies may prohibit one relative from supervising another or from married couples from working together.
•Behave professionally:-Regardless of the strategy you choose to use, a key characteristic for dealing with nepotism is to behave with professionalism. Continue to work as you would normally and approach issues of nepotism with decorum. Behaving unprofessionally and without a certain level of dignity is likely to backfire and stop you from reaching your goal.
•Create viable communication channels:- Organizations may be committing nepotism without even realising it! Provide employees with proper communication to discuss where nepotistic biases may lie in the company. This provides employees with greater confidence in expressing their unhappiness in a polite and diligent manner.
•Clear and consistent:- Clear and consistent manner of evaluation backed up by data and multiple examples as evidence.
What's to be done or recommendations:-
•Ask for advice:-First of all, you may try to talk to your coworkers. Examine if they have experienced a similar situation in your workplace and if the situation turns out to be a mutually perceived problem, you can work it out together.
•Get yourself out of the situation:-Think about how serious the unfair favoring is.Is it harmless and it is just bugging you because you are personally sensitive to the injustice of any kind.If it is harmless, let it go and turn to making yourself better, if not, leave. If nothing helps you to solve the problem for yourself and if the nepotism grows more and more visible and is hindering your professional progress you could consider resigning.
Nepotism isn’t going to end everywhere .
Like in film industry :-It is up to the audience to appreciate the craft and aesthetics if they actually wish to avoid the dreadful fate of young artists in the near future. The filmmakers, actors, screenwriters and singers, without any godfather, won’t be willing to raise their voice against nepotism and favouritism unless there is backing from the audiences.
